Position Title: Assistant Professor, Director of Orchestras

Position Summary: Washburn University’s Department of Music invites applications for the position of Director of Orchestras. The position will begin August 1, 2024. This position is a nine-month, tenure-track appointment as Assistant Professor. A completed doctorate is necessary for a tenure-track appointment.
Each selected candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to pursuing teaching excellence at Washburn University, including a dedication to developing inclusive teaching practices that engage students from diverse backgrounds.
Essential Functions:
• Fulfill teaching expectations associated with a tenure-track appointment as an Assistant Professor. Teach on average 12-load hours per semester (either in-person or online, according to departmental needs) or an equivalent full workload as outlined in the faculty handbook. These courses will include courses in conducting and other classes that fit the successful applicant’s qualifications.
• Serve as Director/Conductor for the Washburn University Orchestra and Washburn University String Orchestra.
• Collaborate with community organizations such as Topeka Symphony Orchestra, Topeka Youth Symphony Orchestra, and Sunflower Music Festival.
• Division coordinator for all department orchestral activities.
• Collaborate with faculty to promote professional growth within the department.
• Establish a successful record of creative/scholarship activities.
• Contribute to the life of the department and university through service activities.
• Conduct Washburn Opera Studio productions, as assigned.
• Maintain an active level of professional activity in high school recruitment.
• Perform additional job-related functions as assigned or as appropriate.
Required Qualifications:
• Doctorate in music; ABD applicants will be considered with completion of the doctorate required by August 2025.
• Orchestral ensemble conducting at the collegiate level.
• Classroom teaching experience.
• Demonstrated commitment to developing inclusive teaching practices that engage students from diverse backgrounds.
Official transcripts will be required at time of hire.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Two years of public school teaching experience.
• University teaching experience.
• Budgetary and administrative experience.
• Demonstrated ability to recruit students at the university level.
• Demonstrated commitment to perform repertoire that is diverse and inclusive.
