Position Summary: The Auto Shop Mechanic will diagnose mechanical failure by means of visual and auditory checks and using test equipment such as voltmeters, compression gauge testers, ohmmeters and engine analyzers to determine the exact nature or extent of repair or adjustment necessary to complete work and any additional repairs.
Essential Functions:
Employees are expected to use equipment to manufacturer and University standards and to comply with University and OSHA policies and regulations. New employees must complete safety training within 6 months of hire.
Repair and maintain automobiles, trucks, graders, tractors, power mowers, forklifts, golf carts, skid loaders, backhoes, sand spreaders, snow plows and other grounds and mechanical equipment as well as custodial equipment such as floor buffers, vacuums, etc.
Diagnose mechanical failure by means of visual and auditory checks and using test equipment such as voltmeters, compression gauge testers, ohmmeters and engine analyzers to determine the exact nature or extent of repair or adjustment necessary to complete work and any additional repairs.
Respond to all vehicle trouble calls.
Maintain records of all repairs and work requests using a Computerized Maintenance Management System or other University software as directed.
Assist private providers or other staff with fabrication and repairs performing oxyacetylene and electrical welding or simple blacksmithing, as in forming, bonding and tempering iron and steel by explaining University practices and/or providing information regarding University procedures.
Requisition parts and/or maintain a perpetual inventory of all tools and equipment.
Operate trucks, forklifts, tractors, front-end loaders and other mechanical equipment for repair purposes.
Store and dispose of waste oil, non-hazardous and hazardous waste in compliance with fire codes, EPA and OSHA standards and all other codes, rules, regulations and laws.
Provide service support for campus events.
Maintain a professional, safe and clean work area.
Snow removal duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
Completion of formal training and five years of experience in automotive mechanics.
Ability to work independently and communicate effectively
Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record under University standards.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to:
Respond to emergency service calls outside regularly scheduled work hours.
Work from a ladder and/or a lift.
Move and/or maneuver materials weighing as much as 50 pounds.
Work in extreme weather conditions and work involving lawnmowers and other hazardous tools and equipment.
Preferred Qualifications:
Completion of formal training in the automotive or a related field.
American Welding Society certification.
CFC refrigerant recovery certification.
Experience with a Computerized Maintenance Management System.
Full time Hourly Mon-Fri 8am-4:30pm
