A Washburn University Police Detective is expected to perform comprehensive criminal investigation, law enforcement and crime prevention work. The work is performed independently with little supervision, applying a high level of independent judgment and authority within the confines of University rules, regulations and policies; city and state laws as well as accepted best practices of investigative work to find and implicate perpetrators. As the lead investigator for the Police Department, drawing upon independent judgment, training and experience to complete investigative activities.

Essential Functions:
• Reviews police reports and interacts with supervisors and officers to determine the necessity for further investigation into reported crimes.
• Determines and employs appropriate courses of investigative actions to reach successful case solutions.
• Advises first responding officers of initial actions required to secure crime scenes. Provides guidance and direction to all officers involved to ensure the integrity of the investigation and evidence.
• Recognizes, collects, and processes physical evidence such as photographs, fingerprints, fluids, metals, tool marks, casts, and drugs in a legally acceptable manner for further investigation and laboratory analysis.
• Interprets evidence as it relates to the crime scene, and preserves evidence for use in analysis and by the court.
• Conducts interviews with victims, witnesses, suspects, and other persons in custody, and makes arrests when warranted.

Required Qualifications:
• High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
• Two years of experience as a certified law enforcement officer.
• No record of conviction for any felony crime, or conviction of any crime of domestic violence/domestic battery, or under any type of current protection from abuse order or stalking order.
• No record of conviction for any crime, felony or misdemeanor, that prohibits an individual from receiving certification from CPOST.
• This is a "designated safety sensitive position" and will be required to undergo drug testing.
• Ability to work any shift/hours as assigned and to respond to emergency call-backs within a reasonable amount of time.
• Valid driver's license with a driving record that meets University standards.
• Certification from the Kansas Commission on Peace Officers' Standards and Training.

Physical Requirements:
• Must be at least 21 years of age.
• Demonstrate proficiency in the use of a firearm at least once per training year.

Preferred Qualifications:
• College coursework in the field of Criminal Justice.
• Experience as a full-time detective or investigator for a certified law enforcement agency or fire department.
• Experience investigating sexual assault cases.
