Position Title: Upward Bound Instructor Pool
Department: Ctr Student Success and Retention
Advertised Pay: $25.50/hour
Campus Location: Washburn University

Position Summary: This is a part-time, contract appointment. Upward Bound Instructors provide instruction and tutoring to high school students participating in Washburn University's Upward Bound Program. Instructors provide instruction in non-credit bearing courses in Core subject areas: Math, Laboratory Sciences, Foreign Language, English Composition, and Literature. Upward Bound Instructors are grant-funded positions.
Essential Functions:
Deliver instruction to students in the Upward Bound Saturday Academy and/or Summer Academy
Design engaging curriculum and activities that help students master Core content
Assist students in one-on-one, small group, and classroom settings to facilitate individual learner needs
Encourage students to develop a college-going mindset where they see themselves thriving in a college context
Enact a pedagogical philosophy that aligns with the missions, vision, and values of Washburn Upward Bound
Monitor student attendance, behavior, and academic development
Assess student performance using formative and summative assessments
Maintain active communication with the Upward Bound Director and Upward Bound Advisor
This position does require you to teach in-person
Perform additional job-related duties as assigned or as appropriate
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in relevant subject matter
Minimum two years experience teaching the subject to high school and/or college students
Experience working with youth from diverse backgrounds
Demonstrated ability to create an inclusive environment for students
Ability to travel to Washburn University to teach classes
Proven ability to use classroom technology for instruction
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with Upward Bound staff and students
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree in relevant subject matter
Experience working with TRIO or similar program
Bilingual (Spanish) capability
Professional and/or personal experience overcoming barriers similar to those of Upward Bound participants
Special Instructions to Applicants:
The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to continue teaching for the Upward Bound program during the Academic Year.
