Position Summary: Washburn University’s Department of Music invites applications for the position of Assistant Director of Bands and Applied Low Brass. This position is a nine-month non-tenure-track appointment as Lecturer with the possibility of renewal. The position will begin August 1, 2025.

Essential Functions:
• Fulfill teaching expectations associated with a non-tenure appointment. Teach 12- hours per semester (either in-person or online) or a full workload as outlined in the faculty handbook.
• Teach and develop undergraduate applied trombone/euphonium or tuba majors, classes, and seminars as assigned and as dependent upon department needs, which may include brass techniques, chamber ensemble, low brass seminar, applied lessons, general education courses or some combination of classes consistent with the candidate’s training and interests.
• Serve as the Assistant Director of Bands for all aspects of a comprehensive band program. We are an NCAA Division II institution with two concert bands, marching band, and basketball bands.
• Recruitment and retention of music students.
• Fulfill service expectations associated with non-tenure-track appointment, including engaging in recruitment activities in the department, university, and profession. Responsibilities include school visits, clinics, networking with local music educators, and participation in on-campus recruitment events/festivals.
• Perform additional job-related duties as assigned or as appropriate.

Required Qualifications:
• Doctorate in Music; ABD applicants will be considered with completion of doctorate by August 1, 2026.
• Experience in instrumental wind ensemble conducting at the College level.
• Experience directing university athletic bands, including drill writing and/or arranging.
• Experience teaching applied low brass at the collegiate level.
• Experience with classroom teaching at the collegiate level.
• Demonstrated dedication to developing inclusive teaching practices that engage all learners
• Official educational transcripts required at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience designing and writing drills using Pyware.
• A successful record of recruiting and maintaining an applied studio at the collegiate level.
• Experience teaching applied trombone/euphonium at the collegiate level.
• Experience with directing and developing community youth programs.
• Experience teaching/coaching and performing in chamber ensembles.
• Experience performing in multiple musical styles, including contemporary music and other popular idioms.
